Multi-Factor authentication is used to provide added security to Office 365 accounts, before it can be used you will need set up the additional authentication method on your account.
Once Multi-Factor authentication is enforced on your account you will be prompted to set it up when logging in. You can also setup your MFA method in advance or register a new method or device.

Using an Authenticator app such as Microsoft Authenticator is the recommended method, using the Phone method should only be used as a fall-back where the Authenticator app is not able to be used.
Adding Multi-Factor Authentication if asked when signing in
- If Multi-Factor is currently being enforced on your account you will receive a notification when logging in. Select Next to proceed with registering for MFA or select Skip for now if you would like to defer registering for a later date. You will have a 14-day grace period from the day you receive the notification to register for MFA
- By default you will be asked to setup MFA using Microsoft Authenticator if you want to register to use a text message or phone call instead select 'I want to setup up a different method' and select Phone from the drop down menu.

Adding or updating Multi-Factor Authentication
- Sign in to your school account and then go to your My Account portal. This can be accessed via this link or whilst logged into Office 365 by clicking on your account picture in the top right and selecting View Account from the menu.
- Select Security info in the left menu or by using the Update Info link in the Security info pane.
- Then, select Add method in the Security info pane.
- Choose one of available methods from list and follow the relevant guide below.
Adding the Microsoft Authenticator App
- On the Add a method page, select Authenticator app from the list, and then select Add.
- On the Start by getting the app page, select Download Now for instructions to download and in install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. Once you have the app installed, select Next.
- Remain on the Set up your account page while you set up and sign into the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app, select to allow notifications (if prompted), select Add account / the '+' symbol on the top right, and then select Work or school account.
Note: The first time you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you might receive a prompt asking whether to allow the app to access your camera (iOS) or to allow the app to take pictures and record video (Android). You must select Allow so the authenticator app can access your camera to take a picture of the QR code in the next step. If you don't allow the camera, you can still set up the authenticator app, but you'll need to add the code information manually. For information about how to add the code manually, see see Manually add an account to the app.
- Return to the Set up your account page on your computer, and then select Next. The Scan the QR code page appears.
- Scan the provided code with the Microsoft Authenticator app QR code reader, which appeared on your mobile device.
- Select Next on the Scan the QR code page on your computer. A notification is sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device, to test your account.
- Approve the notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app, and then select Next. Your security info is updated to use the Microsoft Authenticator app by default to verify your identity when using two-step verification or password reset.
Adding Phone Verification
- On the Add a method page, select Phone from the list, and then select Add.
- One the Phone page select the relevant country and enter your phone number.
- Select Either Receive a Code to authenticate via text message or Call Me authenticate via a phone call.
Receive a Code
- If you selected Receive a Code on the previous page you will be text a six digit code
- Enter the code and select Next.
- Your security info is updated to use a text message by default to verify your identity when using two-step verification or password reset.
Call Me
- If you selected Call Me on the previous page you will receive a phone call with instructions
- Complete the instructions in the phone call and your security info is updated to use a phone call by default to verify your identity when using two-step verification or password reset.
